China’s President Xi Jinping has been very clear he sees the West as an “enemy”, former senior advisor to Secretary of State Mary Kissel says.

She claimed the Chinese President’s ambitions are “much bigger than Taiwan”.

“I think that’s very clear from the military he’s building,” she told Sky News host Sharri Markson.

“We should always want to have the possibility of dialogue with a regime like that – the door should always be open.”

Ms Kissel added that she doesn’t see any problem with leaders of the democracies of the world conversing with Xi Jinping but claimed they should also “speak over the regime to the Chinese people”.

“Party and the people are two different things.”
