“This year is my first time playing for the Skipper Cup and I have learnt a lot,” the tight-head prop said.

Balancing studies and rugby has been tough for Year 13 student of Batinikama College, Sailosi Tamanikaiyaro.

However, the Vurevure, Taveuni, native has been able to juggle both and is loving his experience with the Macuata Under-20 side.

He shares maternal links to Namoli Village, Labasa, Macuata, where he was born and bred.

The 18-year-old was not interested in playing at first before he was motivated by his cousins.

He did not regret taking up the challenge to play rugby while continuing his final year at high school.

He is one of the nine high school students who are part of the 30-member squad.

“This year is my first time playing for the Skipper Cup and I have learnt a lot,” the tight-head prop said.

“My cousins motivated me to play because of my built and size; they encouraged me to try for a prop.

“I have learnt a lot for my position especially knowing that my job is crucial during scrums.

“Attending a school that does not take part much in rugby, I know that being in the Under-20 side will open opportunities for young players like me.

“I trust in the Lord and His plans in whatever he Has for me regarding my rugby career, however I will have to finish my studies first.”

Tamanikaiyaroi hopes to pursue a career in teaching after the completion of his Year 13 studies.

The Macuata U20 takes on Yasawa tomorrow at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
