Outrigger Canoeing Regatta Starts Tomorrow

The event will see over 40 teams from various businesses and organisations competing.

Suva Business House Outrigger Regatta starts on Saturday.

One of the capital’s iconic events on the sporting calendar is set to return this weekend with a wave of excitement.

The Suva Business House Outrigger Canoeing Regatta hosted by the Fiji Outrigger has a vibrant history that dates back to the early 2000s.

Over the past two decades, it has evolved into a much-anticipated gathering, drawing businesses into the world of outrigger canoeing.

This year’s event will get underway tomorrow and then Saturday, July 6, that will see teams battle it out at the University of the South Pacific foreshore. Spectators can expect two days of thrilling action on the water and what promises to be a showcase of athleticism, skill, and camaraderie.

Fiji Outrigger president Biutoka Kacimaiwai said the regatta said it provides an unparalleled team-building experience for our business community and enhances both professional and personal development.

“Over the years, we’ve also seen the way the regatta has increased visibility and participation for the sport itself while promoting physical activity and wellness that’s accessible to all ages,” he said.

The event will see over 40 teams from various businesses and organisations competing.

These businesses not only contribute through their entry fees, which help cover training, equipment, and event logistics but also promote the event within their networks, boosting community engagement and awareness.

Key highlights include 250m sprints and fun races. “The after-function for networking and debriefing is as much about the experience of being there as anything else,” Kacimaiwai noted, adding that tickets for the after-function are available for $20 on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Safety remains a top priority for the event. “We’ve implemented comprehensive safety measures, including lifejackets, trained volunteers as steerers, and real-time communication systems,” Kacimaiwai said.

“All participants undergo training to familiarise themselves with the equipment and safety protocols. Additionally, medical personnel will be on-site during the events to handle any emergencies, ensuring a secure environment for everyone involved.”

As the Suva Business House Outrigger Canoeing Regatta approaches, anticipation is building for what promises to be another unforgettable celebration of a sport deeply rooted in Pacific culture. The public is encouraged to attend and cheer on the teams, enjoying the lively atmosphere and post-event celebrations.
