“We need to make sure that we have the very best people to run it not just the management and CEO (chief executive officer) but at board level,” he said.

The new Fiji Rugby Union structural change where there will be no Prime Minister’s nomination in the board will not go down easily.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, the Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru said although he is unhappy with it, he is putting it forward to the Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to comment on it.

“The PM should comment on it first,” Saukuru said.

The structural change was endorsed at Saturday’s Special General Meeting at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay Convention Centre.

FRU interim Trustees chairman Peter Mazey said rugby operations should be run professionally.

“We need to make sure that we have the very best people to run it not just the management and CEO (chief executive officer) but at board level,” he said.

“We now call the annual general meeting (AGM) in 45 days.” Mazey said the FRU new board of directors and chairman would be elected in the AGM.

“The new structure is totally union orientated as the unions will nominate and vote for who they want to be in each position.

“There will no longer be a government or a Prime Minister’s nominee and a World Rugby appointed as its just Fiji Rugby where the members of our unions will vote.”

Mazey said all the union members had unanimously agreed to the proposed structure.

Also, the new structure sees FRU doing away with the appointment of a patron and president.
