Gizo market hit by limited supply of garden produces

WESTERN Provincial Capital Gizo experienced a limited supply of garden produce at its market throughout last week as people across the province have been busy participating in the electoral process.

As observed by the Solomon Star, the Gizo main market was virtually empty as most of the market vendors from in and around Gizo were busy participating in various campaign activities leading up to the Election Day.

Many of the vendors in Gizo also travelled out early to their villages to participate in Wednesday 17 April polling.

Market vendors from the nearby islands also cut back on their trips to Gizo.

Gizo market opens from Sunday to Saturday.

And most days, market vendors islands near Gizo go there to sell their garden produces.

But last week, the turnout of market vendors was poor, it was observed.

This affected Gizo residents who rely on the market for their supply of fruits and vegetables.

Due to the limited supply of fruits, vegetables, root crops and even fish, the prices of these commodities hiked.

With the high number of people who were in Gizo for the elections, nothing was spared at the market.

A Gizo resident and customer Nathan Leko said the election ‘fever’ affected the supply of garden produces at the market in the past weeks.

He said some of the market vendors who were able sell their garden produces within a short period of time because of high demand.
