French farmers block major roads around Paris as protests continue

French farmers are ramping up their industrial action in and around Paris, blocking motorways and other major transport routes.

Protesters are demanding better pay and fewer environmental regulations.

In response to the protests in France, the government deployed 15,000 police and gendarmes.

“We’re applying pressure on the government and President Macron and Europe – there is no longer any harmony,” Farmer Matthieu Viver said.

“The UK left Europe, and now there’s talk of Ukraine joining; if we did a survey today in France, maybe the French would leave Europe.

Mr Viver went on to say that cheap imports from Ukraine have hit farmers’ income and lowered food standards.

Other protests are taking place across the country.
