Detective Sergeant shot and killed while arresting a murder suspect

Apia, Samoa – 22 July 2024 – A Detective Sergeant, Peniamina Perite was shot and killed while arresting a murder suspect at Fasitoo-uta village this afternoon.

The police held a short prayer service at the national hospital morgue when his body was taken in late this afternoon.

In a press release, the Ministry of Police, Prisons & Corrections Service (SPPCS) highlighted the detective’s service “as a dedicated and exemplary officer who served the Ministry with distinction, honour and unwavering commitment.”

Detective Perite and two other police officers went to arrest a murder suspect from an incident at Fasitoo-uta where a man from Nofoalii was allegedly shot dead on Sunday night.

“Samoa police are working closely with the village of Fasito’o-uta to locate the suspect, who is currently on the run. We assure the public that every effort is being made to bring the perpetrator to justice and ensure the safety of the community,” said the Ministry of Police Press Release.

The Police statement said his contribution to law enforcement in Samoa have been invaluable, and his absence will be deeply felt by his colleagues, friends and the wider community.

“Throughout his distinguished career, he demonstrated exceptional skills, integrity and dedication to duty, not only was he a well-respected officer, but a mentor and friend to many.

“His commitment to justice and his compassionate approach to policing earned him the admiration and respect of all who had the privilege of working with him.

“The Ministry extends heartfelt condolences to his family and asks the public to respect the privacy of his family at this hour of grief.”

Police will also host a memorial service to honour the fallen officer.
