A delegation from the Archdiocese of Honiara and Gizo Diocese, have departed from Honiara to Papua New Guinea (PNG) on Wednesday to participate in the 45th Pilgrim Visit of His Holiness, Pope Francis.
He is scheduled to visit PNG from the 6th–9th September 2024.
The delegation comprises of priests along with religious sisters. Other members of the delegation will leave on Thursday, 5th September 2024.
This historic visit by Pope Francis marks a significant moment for the Catholic community in the region. As a member of the Papua New Guinea Catholic Bishops Conference, the Solomon Islands will be represented during the Papal Mass on Sunday, 8th September, at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Waigani, where a representative from the Solomon Islands will have the honor of participating in the readings.
Pope Francis is scheduled to arrive in Port Moresby on Friday, 6th September 2024. His arrival will be marked by a ceremonial Guard of Honour parade and a 21-gun salute at the APEC Terminal, Jacksons International Airport.
The itinerary for His Holiness includes a series of significant events, such as a courtesy visit to the Governor-General of Papua New Guinea, meetings with political and religious leaders, and interactions with the faithful and various Catholic communities.
An important highlight of the visit will be on Sunday, 8th September, when Pope Francis will travel to Vanimo, Sandaun Province, the birthplace of Blessed Peter To Rot, a martyr for the faith who was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1995.
During his time in Vanimo, His Holiness will meet with the faithful of the Diocese of Vanimo and deliver a special address. The visit will also include a private meeting with a group of missionaries at the Holy Trinity Humanities School in Baro, Vanimo.
This visit is particularly meaningful as it marks the continuation of a longstanding relationship between the Catholic Church and the people of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. The late Pope John Paul II previously visited PNG in 1984 and 1995, and the Solomon Islands in 1984.
The Catholic community in the Solomon Islands is honored to be part of this momentous occasion and looks forward to the blessings and spiritual guidance that Pope Francis will impart during his visit.
