Amelia’s Jewel cruises to victory and has ‘more in the tank’

Gun Perth mare Amelia’s Jewel simply did what was needed to win Saturday’s Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes.

No more. No less.

Amelia’s Jewel carried the hopes of quaddies and multis around the country when she made her Melbourne debut at Flemington but gave all involved a simple watch.

A wide gate looked the biggest obstacle to Amelia’s Jewel notching her eighth win from 10 starts but jockey Damian Lane kept it simple on the $1.95 favourite.

Lane kept Amelia’s Jewel out of trouble before latching onto the back of talented Lindsay Park mare Caste for a cart into the race from the 800m to the home turn.

Amelia’s Jewel’s class took over in the straight as she worked through some, not all, of her gears to wear down the plucky Life Lessons to score by a length.

Lane said Amelia’s Jewel had something in hand despite the Let’s Elope Stakes being her first run since her narrow defeat in The Quokka in April.

“It’s still a little bit hard to say because I deadset felt like I was in second gear when I got to Life Lessons,” Lane said.

“Then we got a half-length in front and she just went to put the cue in the rack so she’s still, I daresay, got more in the tank

“She’s a really casual customer that’s still got more to give.”

Amelia’s Jewel’s trainer Simon Miller said the four-year-old was still well short of full fitness, meaning she would continue to improve as she progressed towards either the $10m Golden Eagle in Sydney or the $5m Cox Plate.

“I suppose the exciting thing from our point of view is she’s not screwed down yet so we’ve got plenty of wiggle room to go,” Miller said

“This is just a nice starting point for her and when he (Lane) hadn’t moved on straightening I was like ‘this is an easy watch’, without being arrogant.

“He hasn’t gone full throttle so I thought ‘at least we’re going to be in the finish’.”

TAB trimmed Amelia’s Jewel’s Cox Plate quote from $15 to $11 while she moved to sole favouritism in Golden Eagle betting at $4 ahead of Giga Kick at $4.50.
