Cops’ plea after man left for dead on road

Police are on the hunt for the driver responsible for a believed hit and run which resulted in the death of a man believed to be in his 60s and was left dead on the side of a road.

A passer-by located the body at about 10.30am on Sunday on Waterloo Rd in the town of Trafalgar in Victoria’s West Gippsland region.

While police have yet to formally identify the man, investigators believe he was hit by a vehicle on Waterloo Rd, east of Davey Dr, sometime overnight on Saturday or in the early hours of Sunday.

Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are calling on anyone who may have witnessed the man walking in the area, or have dashcam, or CCTV footage of the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police say he was wearing a black tracksuit top, a white chequered shirt, black trackpants with two white stripes down the sides, and no shoes.

The unit’s Detective Sergeant Peter Romanis is set to speak to media on Monday morning where he is expected to share more details of the incident.

The man is the 162nd person to have died in fatal road incidents across Victoria this year.
